North River Greenbelt: Swamp White Oak Trail
Location: 5957 Elk Horn St, Norwalk
County: Warren
Bathrooms: No
Trails: Dirt
Mileage: 2.24 miles
Useful information: Roads to the location are gravel. Appears to have decent fishing, as there were a few LARGE carp left behind by fisherman in the parking lot. Two bridges. Nice creek for dogs to get a drink, but also along North River (flowing fast when we visited). Half of the trail is through the woods and the other half is through, what appears to be, prairie. Muddy when I visited, but appears to be well maintained and easily found trails to follow. After 2nd bridge comes the intersection, go either way because it's a loop that brings you back.
From county website https://www.warrenccb.org/north-river-greenbelt-swamp-white-oak-tract/ : Established by the Iowa Department of Transportation as a wetland mitigation site, Swamp White Oak emphasizes constructed wetlands and bottomland timber. Swamp White Oak is named for the bottomland oak that can be found here. The plentiful game and diverse songbird populations make the 123-acres of Swamp White Oak a popular destination for wildlife observation. Many species including deer, squirrels, raccoons, waterfowl, and many furbearing animals are found here. There is a mowed path leading into the area from the parking lot.
